Revisiting Carmen: A Timeless Classic
The initial reception of Georges Bizet's opera, Carmen, has often been misrepresented as disastrous. While some audience members in Paris were taken aback by the protagonist?s bold sexuality and reviews were harsh, the opera achieved 45 performances in its debut year, ultimately becoming the most beloved French opera despite its Spanish setting. The melodies of Carmen are unmatched in their appeal.
Over the years, various productions have interpreted the tragic story of Carmen, her obsessive lover, and a flamboyant bullfighter in different contexts, including Franco-era Spain and contemporary U.S. Southwest. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the opera, the Dallas Opera will commence its 2025-26 season with sets and costumes inspired by the original Paris premiere. Unlike many modern adaptations that incorporate sung dialogue by Ernest Guiraud, this performance will present the opera as Bizet intended, featuring spoken dialogue.
Mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti will portray Carmen, alongside Saimir Pirgu as Don Jos, Teresa Perrotta as Micala, and Gihoon Kim as Escamillo, with music direction by Emmanuel Villaume.
Performances are scheduled for various dates at the Winspear Opera House.
